Hey Beef, you any good with partial differential equations?

I need to solve a 1D heat equation using implicit Trapezoid method.

Been at it for days, but can't seem to find a good algorithm (numerical) to solve it by.

Not really my thing I'm afraid - I'm more about the Pure maths than the Applied, and pretty much not about the Statistics at all (apart from basic probability and Markov processes). Never done much on PDEs.

Too bad. My area is applied (numerical and statistical) math. I solved the problem, but the solution was horribly inefficient. Oh well, might as well give it up. It's summer

Yeah, we pure people tend to forget about efficiency and wonder whether things are theoretically possible rather than possible in practice - i know a bit about computability and things like turing machines and incompleteness and there's a lot of "we know there's some representing formula" or "we know there is some turing program which will compute this" or "run the process until after some finite time..." without worrying about the fine details. it's rather enjoyable

I actually got what beef got for number 2, which is pretty impressive for a 14 year old. I didnt put it on though, cause I thought nobody would take the word of Indignus IV seriously.

I recommend to go through the basics first, and then proceed. It worked for me 100%! k:

Just check it out! k:
:w00t: Thanks a lot man, this site is awesome, too bad I didn't before it would've save me a lot of failed test., and now we're moving to trigonometry which this site doesn't seem to cover...

I like computational science. The feeling of being able to solve an advanced mathematical problem consisting of millions of equations and equally many variables. Makes me feel powerful... ok you can call the mental institute now :help:

all you need for trig is SOH CAH TOA, and the Cosine rule, then you're set.

That site was a bit ugly but seemed to have some good stuff about algebra.

It covers that too! Just look for it, I'm sure you'll find it!
I'm glad to help! That's why I'm here for! k:

Oh ,boy I helped another man! I feel so good! :Brain:

A 14 year-old with an IQ of 160 - why not?
If you'd say it, I'd believe it (especially since I got the resould myself).

I doubt very much that people that would get a wrong answer would post it - they'd rather say they don't know or stay clear of this topic.
