![]() Get back on topic. It's not because one thread was overwhelmed by offtopic posts that you need to flood another for the same reason by domino effect.
Troop: what I mean by wargame is usually games like Battle Isle. There is indeed a lot of strategy in those games, but they do have their own genre. And it's "wargame". |

![]() Or that guy just needed to be locked up in a small room with only a PC in front of him and he may not come out before he completed the next few strategy games: (from beginning till the end)
1: Dune 2 2: Command & Conquer 3: Red Alert 4: Total anhallation 5: Age of Empires 5: Starcraft 6: Rome, Total war After he is done with those 6 games he will know what stratety games are and he will never forget it for the rest of his life

![]() Those are all RTS. While Dune 2, C&C and Starcraft had the most stategy in them, Red Alert, Total Annihilation and especially Age of Empire are of the "build more tanks to win" (or Priest for Age of Empire) type which exclude almost all existing strategy. I don't know about Rome: Total War because I never played it but I assume it is the same...
The main difference between the old school RTS and the "new school" RTS is speed. In Dune 2, Warcraft or even C&C the game was inately slow, giving you time to think and react. In todays game, even Starcraft, the speed is so high that the most effective answer to an ambush attack is hit "A" and send your troops ahead of the ennemy troops and hope you'll think fast enough to actually use any of the special abilities of some of your troops while you watch how the fight goes on. Usually, the player who trained the most and who have the quickest (again, trained) reflexes will win. That's not what I call a strategy game. To make matters worse, multiplayer games usually have speed settings at the fastest. This is extremely common, and I always guessed that it was so one could play only fast games and thus play more games at the end of the day than to really enjoy playing the game first of all. Just like if the only interest they had was in winning, not playing. |
