I would like to thank the folks who created and have maintained this web
site. It is well presented and maintained with an ecellent assortment of
games.
After reviewing this Web site, I noticed that "Ancient Evil" had a lot of
forum activity. This was either due to a level of frustration or real interest
in finishing the game.
I'm not real sure what makes a game interesting. If "Ancient Evil" touts
itself as a "role playing" game, I suppose that would set the game apart
from other games. i.e, strategy, action etc. A Strategy game would need
some form of strategy to finish the game etc. A Role playing game would
seemingly rely on the Role being played and how the Role is played to
spark an interest in the game and to finish the game.
As a Role playing game, "Ancient Evil" rather falls short of the mark. As
the fourm noted, the character selection (Warrior, Sorcerer etc.) seems
to play little part in "ancient Evil". In many games, the Warrior
doesn't cast magic and the sorcerer doesn't carry weapons, but
rather relies on magic) "Ancient Evil" is constructed more like an an
Action Game in that anyone can do anything. This is not necessarily
bad, only unexpected.
The purpose for playing "Ancient Evil" is not real clear. The object for
the game is, additionally, not clear. But then again hack and slash
in lieu of an objective has sold many games.
Normally, there is a defined or perceived reason for puzzles, accumulation
of weapons, money or stores. These are only "speed bumps" in this game.
You end up filling your inventory with useless items. Ultimately, this
only adds to frustration. Maybe you can carry your character into
"Ancient Evil 2" where this "accumulation mentality" will be rewarded.
While there is a lot of variety in the "look" of each level, this doesn't
translate into some advantage for the many different characters that this
game allows one to create. At least the looks of the levels added some
variety.
The game seemed to run very smoothly and easy to play without
a lot of confusing ways to fight the many bad people in this game.
The game only crashed once. I tried to cast an area spell (lightining)
and the game locked up. I had to fight 5 bad guys individually and
take some hits to defeat that bunch of ruffians. This was probably
due to my computer, a 400MHZ machine that I keep to play the older
games. It has two hard drives, one with W98SE and the other with
DOS 6.2. (Dos games run better in Dos sometimes.)
Ancient Evil was a fun game...made a lot easier with the forum provided
by the Web site.
Happy Days,
Zapper
