I found a dirty trick you can pull on your rivals if they start after you. If you use railroad tracks to block their stations or force them to build bridges over your tracks, you can make them spend more money than they need to. If you build two or three tiles of tracks along the path they want to take, their bridges will be longer when they try to bridge over you.

Example:
Rival's intended path: ---
Your block: ||||
(One - is two game tiles, one | is one game tile)

-------||||-------

If you're quick, the rival may even try to build around your block, so you'll have to stop it. When the rival is forced to withdraw tracks, he gains some money back for each, but he doesn't break even. I think if he withdraws bridges, stations, and tunnels, he won't get anything back. I tried this tonight on one rival, and two years after he started, his company was worth about $10,000, and he STILL didn't have any vehicles. You will lose a little money doing this, but it won't be nearly as much as your rival, especially if he has to remove bridges, tunnels, and stations.
