But I wonder how such mere organization (in XIX century it was just kind of sect) could rise to some kind of world authority?

if we forget for a second that the Masons were invented by conspiracy theorsits to expalin why they sitll aren't presidents (or have a shiny new car every year), the key to power is money, lots of it (collected as a memebers fee, or something).
if your question was more along the lines of how they manged to effectively do this (which is not what you asked, I know, but maybe other sare inetested)
it comes from having cell leaders:
............M H Q.............
.........../........\.............
......RHQ...........RHQ........
......./...\.........../...\.........
..MCC..MCC..MCC..MCC...
../...\.../...\.../...\.../...\..
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
//where:
MHQ: masson Head quarers- not realy a head quarters, more of a secret counsil that meets once a year in a random location. composed of Regional leaders.
RHQ: regional Head quarters- composed of county leaders
MCC: main county cell- composed of city cell leaders
CC: city cell- composed of lowly massons
