I try to avoid that by buying passenger ships. Sure, they take a couple of years and a lot of cash to build, but after that you don't need any cash on hand to buy goods. Just fill the fuel tank, insure the ship and start making huge profits.

Tip: New York - Vancouver is one of the best passenger routes in the game, as long as your ship's range is sufficient. In real life I can't imagine anyone paying some $15000 for this trip, but in Ocean Trader passengers just pay per nautical mile, even for weird routes
