Gun culture?
There's no such thing Havell, despite what you think, "rednecks" -for loss of a better word- are a very small part of the south, and the reason there's such a push against guns in the south is because a large part of related crimes take place there, there are no "rednecks" running around giving their little kids weapons, there isn't any such thing.
It's just stereotyping, just like the narrow eyed funny voiced Chinese, or the obnoxious and snotty Frenchman.
