I'm not sure to understand what you mean (what's the colour balance layer? Could it be something in Photoshop that there isn't in GIMP?)... but I don't wanna make that pic in one colour...
Well, I use to put everything that I want of the same colour in a grey scale layer and after I use the "colour layer" tool of GIMP: is this what you want to say me?

They mean: water, ground, fire, wood and metal (probably...); the five energies "used" in shiatsu.
