That's exactly what Illusion softworks did with with the Hidden and Dangerous series. A few months before the sequal was released the first game and all of its expansion packs were turned into freeware by the company and released to the public.

Hidden and Dangerous, and it's sequals, are the only games besides Operation Flashpoint that I've found to come close to re-creating the feeling and gameplay of Seal Team.
