I've gotten my wolves to mate the traditional way, but I've also discovered a little trick (still needs more testing, especially in other environments and with different pack sizes).
-Start a simulation game in the timber region.
-Start the simulation in autumn.
-Including your own wolf, make sure your pack consists of no more than three members.
-Play a female wolf** (and become alpha female before autumn ends).
In the timber region, mating season begins in early winter; play through autumn, but stick close to the alpha male until winter arrives. On the first day of winter, the male should automatically initiate mating.
Again, I've yet to play with larger pack sizes-- an important variable since the the traditional mating strategy requires that the alpha male and female be alone.
**I actually had a female initiate mating once, but that was waaaay back in '97 (insert memory failure here). I was an alpha male, and my pack had 6 members. More testing, yes? I'll get around to it someday.

mg2:
Hope that helps.
