And now something completely different:

Since role playing is about imagination, could it be that the players don't play 'living' charachters? I mean, imagine a Disney cartoon where a book comes to life. It would be a challenge to play a 'dead' object, or a non-physical idea, like an rpg rule. Imagine this scenario: In the quest for the ultimate rpg, the rules take the law in their own 'hands' and battle for domination. They talk, walk, do all the things we do, still they're rules, with a rule's 'mind and behaviour'. Some are strict, some are more 'elastic'. They all have their own agendas, powers and whatever the game designers can think of.

EDIT: You even got tension here: Anarchy (the freedom of rpg playing) vs government/bureaucracy (the rules)

Just an idea. Not very well thought through. Still, it could be interesting.
