In Diablo 2 you can have as much as lvl 100 (up to lvl 40-45 reachable effectively in normal difficulty). As for the necromancer, you're already doomed. You had to skill up skeletons first of all and the skeleton mastery (if you don't have that one high up yet), then you wouldn't have that many problems in CS right now (that is, if you have the latest patch 1.11 installed). Golem isn't the best choise also, but if, then clay golem (slowes enemies, much life) is the best until you can choose revive skill. With it you will have it relative easy then, eventhough still little slow.
If I would be you, I would restart the necromancer and build up skeletons and mastery instead. Skill lvl 5-6 of skeletons is enough for the start, then max the mastery out, after which the skeletons. 1 point in Revive can't hurt, either.

I have D2 patched up to v1.11 (what good is that anyway?).

You're saying that Golem isn't good. I've gone through half of the game with a ClayG (only way) and the rest with a BloodG or IronG. My usuall attack consists of this:

Blood Golem up front with me (bone-armored) on either side + 3 Skeleton mages in the back.
The blood golem is definately the best choice here - he provides me with health he steals of of enemies, I provide a powerful melee atttack with my Necro + I curse all with "Amplify Damage". I flee a few meters off of the enemies if the going gets tough and then - come back for some more. If fighting a powerful boss - I create a TP rightaway, so that I could jump in anytime without fearing death or going through the dungeons again.

I don't see a sign of weakness in all this, but I do wanna level up to lvl30 so that I could use the revive skill.

I thought about having the skeleton army at first, but the skills had requirements for tougher combat and I didn't wanna waste my skillpoints for weak skeletons. Some people say that curses are a waste of time, but I chose some just to know what they do. I think in the early hours the "Iron Maiden" is good, but now my "Amplify Damage" is way better, cause I mainly use it to do great damage to foes in a short period of time, thus eliminating them quicker than with "IM".

I could write down all my stats to you if you could have any tips, suggestions, tricks for my char then. I really think I'll have to go to Act4's first open areas if I wanna level up for the last assault on D. What do you say to that?
