Rioters are stupid, mindless idiots. Peaceful demonstrations are fine and in fact I've attended numerous protests and peace marches myself. The problem with riots is that they're started as an aggressive demonstration by a small group of people who know what they're talking about, then a bunch of morons who want nothing more than to burn things come along and join in the fun, and it escalates into a fullscale riot, and people get hurt. Rioters, police officers, journalists, even civilians, none are safe from the wrath of a full blown riot. Nobody ever achieved any true progress by burning and looting.
