TC: Try changing the soundcard emulation to Sound Blaster Pro 2, and the sound setup accordingly. That's what works for me, at least.

They indeed do gain experience.
You can see the current XP on the in-battle stats screen (called up from the actions menu).
Unfortunately, the XP increases are very small - you'll need several missions to increase any stat, in fact, maybe with the exception of AP which seem far easier to increase.
Walkthrough: Going OK, I'm past mission 5 now. 6 should be a quickie, or at least that's how it seems right now.
