I can independently confirm having seen remarkably similar stories before. I'm relative sure one was on the HOTUD forum about a year or so ago (though I fear it may have been nuked during the mess that went on over there several months back). I recall it, in the end, being some sort of mis-guided senior thesis research about the psychology of online communities. This whole thread is eerily similar.
