If the problem was with sound, you muight try running the game with enabled sound, BUT through VDMSound rather than in plain Windows.
It's a little similar to DosBox, but much faster (at the cost of less extensive emulation), and since you are able to run the game in plain Windows, it should work just as good.

In order for the game to run with VDMSound's default settings, run its config and set soundcard to Sound Blaster 16 (or Sound Blaster Pro / Pro 2, if no option for SB16 is present), IRQ 7, DMA 1 and Adress 220.
