For anyone else stuck at the guard/vase/gate scene, the trick here is to use the keyboard arrow keys to move (do not use the mouse).
I remember struggling for quite a while with this scene myself. You must throw the stone, and almost as soon as the guard starts walking towards the vase, even though you think he will see you, you must press your right arrow to walk directly right (horizontally) until you are positioned in such a way that you can press your up arrow to walk directly up (vertically) to the gateway and through it. Once you are through the gateway, the guard will not see you when he turns.
