Agreed.

When I created my character, I looked at the myriad of different skills and thought, "this game is BIG", and I assumed that I would get to develop those skills as the game progressed. Alas, I couldn't even access my stats once I started playing, but I soon discovered that the stats aren't actually used for anything anyway. They just make your character add some informative comments here and there whenever a topic is discussed which is covered by his talents, which do not actually contribute to anything.
Choosing a different set of skills will vastly alter the opportunities open to you. I'm not sure how many different possible story lines there are, but I suspect the separate graphics for each of them are the main reason the game is so short. Don't get me wrong, the general plot is still the same, but, e.g., my first play-through had almost nothing in common with the walkthroughs.

I have only played through once, but I only got one map-update (the police station). Normally a game with maps of this kind will have many map updates, giving you more locations to visit as you progress (a la Gabriel Knight).
I never got *any* map updates! Past a certain point, the game turned into a train speeding to its conclusion, with nothing I could do to stop it (even dying didn't work, heh... though I suspect that was a bug). Choosing nothing still progressed the plot... which I didn't mind too much, because I failed to grab the powder, and dropped the lens.
