Since this has been an ongoing issue, I felt compelled to add my own 2 cents to it...
My setup for LoL is that I have created an ISO image of the CD version. I boot this with MagicDisc, a tool that allows for mounting ISO images as virtual drives. So, you get a virtual CD drive with the mounted CD, as if you had the real CD loaded. It adds greatly to the speed...
Anyway, I don't use dosbox or anything else, I run directly from within XP. To get the sound, here is something that I got a long long time ago when HotU was still up:

If you want to run the game under Windows 95 (or any Windows really), you
need to copy the file VWWSD.386 to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, and
you'll need to add three lines to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI under the
[386Enh] section, like this:
...
[386Enh]
device=vwwsd.386 <-- These are the new lines
DMABufferSize=064 <--
WWSBufferSize=064 <--
...
Don't forget to reboot Windows BEFORE you attempt to start Lands of Lore!
The game _might_ run without this modification of Windows, but will most
probably crash, and will definately not have speech!

Then you do setup.exe and configure the game (soundblaster should work for most computers).
Also important, when running directly under XP, use the "Lands" Shortcut to MS-DOS to start the game, NOT Lands.bat or any of the ones you would use under DOS.
This worked for me. Glad I could play this great game, even though I had to take a 6-year break after making it to the Draracle...
