To youse the books, eg. Big book of science etc., go to your inventory, change the cursor, then lclick on it and hold it, a menu will apear, there are two different icons of a "hand" one to use the item, one to drop it.

The plow is sold by the merchant in the first area (where Cassidy was, you can see it just outside the merchants house, then you can buy it from him (500$ I think) and have it delivered to that farmer.
