Okay, never mind, problem solved. I feel really stupid. To any future person who has an HP laptop with f keys that control brightness, volume, wireless connection, etc.: You have to hold down the fn key as well as the f12, r, n, and q keys in order to get the cheat to work.
FINALLY I can enjoy this game again!....it only took me 3 hours to figure it out.
