They did use it for the search for an Anthrax antidote for the US-Army two years ago. Within a couple of months all molecules where scanned and the range was limited quite a lot, making further research a lot easier:

I've been running it for a couple of years, and I've never been infected with any virusses or hacked (knocks on wood). An up-to-date virusscanner, patched OS, a firewall and some common sense help with that too, but the UD-client has never proven to be any threat.
In short:
AFAIK it's totally safe to download!
