It's not abandonware. The company that makes it,
Spiderweb Software, is a small outfit led by a single programmer. His main series are Avernum, Exile, and Geneforge. The games are deliberately retro in design, and pretty good. He's got free demos up, and sends along a small walkthrough book with each game you purchase.
