The article also said that digg traffic tends to be from 5000-10000 per day, which is quite a bit less than getting slashdotted.

Also, I was just told that our so far visits today totalled somewhere around 33k - well below the 100k we have been able to handle in the past.

Today's slowdown was pretty much the worst I've experienced since being a member. It just doesn't seem to me that the numbers add up.

Oh, and it seems that the digg.com article linked in the first post of this thread has been "buried" - probably because it was a duplicate article.

Actually you're suspicions are probably wrong, it happenned already once, when abandonia was linked on some popular site...
http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?s...ndpost&p=183800

The site itself isn't posted in this topic, but I remember Romano sending me a link to the site, they symptoms were pretty much the same as the digg.com

Very strange. I know I've been online days that we've celebrated having 100k visits (or close) with no problem.

It also depends on what parts of the site are being used, as certain scripts demand more database abuse than others, I suppose.

I've experienced the "too many connections" error a few times since I've been here, but never one that lasted over a few hours like today's.

Too bad Kosta wasn't online today, he could have run the processlist in MySQL and probably figured out exactly where the issue was coming from.

Well it was probably that these 5000 - 10000 visitors downloaded something (most of them) while many regular visitors just check the updates or download one game, they don't go on a spree :P
This is obviously a techno savvy site, so it wouldn't be that odd...

yea, It is a more tech orianted site. For more background, it is the creation of a few guys, and Kevin Rose (The Sreen Savers/Tech TV fans should know). It is a community based news site, where users can submit stories, and other users can "digg" them, and increase its time on the front page. This is a pretty good site if you want to be updated on tech news. They are trying to expand the site into other news though, like world news and stuff. Also, Kevin and Alex Albrech (impossible to spell his name, another guy from TSS), have a ip show, where they talk about the latest digg new while drinking different types of beer. Called Diggnation.

yeah, but do you really think that out of those 100k unique visitors, they mostly just browsed around, not downloading anything? :P

Or that of the 33k we've had today, they *all* downloaded something?

I mean, for 100% of the users today downloading something, we still would have only needed 33% of users on the 100k day downloading something to be roughly (not exactly) equivalent.

Don't get me wrong, I see your point, but from what I've been told, the AB server is pretty sturdy. I'm just curious what part of the script usage could lead to a severe downtime - be it just downloading en masse due to a tech-savvy website article link or otherwise.

For that matter, I have no idea what Kosta's max_connect setting is on the server's MySQL. This could just be a simple matter of having to change the default setting to something a bit higher to allow for instances of higher usage.

Edit: And just so it's clear, I do think the digg.com traffic contributed. I just find the severity of today's slowdown weird.

Edit 2: I think I'll just tell myself that all of the traffic came in those four hours of slowdown even though the article had been up over a day so I can stop wondering about it, since I obviously can't do anything about it, or find out either way :P

Nope.

They didn't :bleh:

I think there is more to this story that simply that Digg popped by. I've been on this site for 2 years now (more or less on a daily basis - spending something like 12 hours online per day), and I have never experienced this kinda connection error for so long.

Not only was it huge, but it affected the AB-forum, the AR-forum, the AB mainsite, the AR mainsite, the AB forum admin panel, the AR forum admin panel, the AB site admin panel and the AR site admin panel.

I've never experienced that. Earlier when the forum has had too many connections, I have still been able to access the main site. And, just like Taikara said, we have had close to 100 000 users on in our "glory days".

And they did download games all over the place. We didn't go down then.

Anyways, when Kosta gets back online, he should be able to figure out what truly happened.

edit:
Don't listen to us.

Tai is an obsessive-compulsive problem solver, and I don't have the first clue about anything. Just ignore us. :bleh:

For the record:
Downloads don't reallly matter much to the responsiveness of AB.

I didn't notice much of the lag you are talking about.

I checked the system logs and except from a few (big) hacking attempts there wasn't anything that special. Although it was much larger then regular. Will analyze it better when I have more time
