![]() Many of you may have heard that Peter Jackson, the director of Lords of The Rings and King Kong, has now become a video-game maker. Thanks to Halo.
Perhaps now we will see more cinematic and epic games. What do you think? |

![]() I think there is a need for more better script writers then directors. afterall they are the ones that give game the story and feeling of realism. instead of having copy&paste Halo levels.

![]() I'm not all that surprised, after all, as no doubt everyone on these forums has noticed, video games these days are focusing more and more on cinematic cutscenes, FMVs and epic storylines. Just look at MGS2. Christ, in fact, don't...that storyline hurt my brain.

![]() Aye, judging from his trilogy I won't like his games.

![]() We need less cinematic games, and more gaming innovations and revolutions, there hasn't been a good one since 1998's Half-Life.

![]() Big cinematic cutscenes and dramatic storylines in games aren't a bad thing, but I hear what pigggy is saying. There needs to be a combination of both. Too many games these days focus on lots of pointless gunfire and action with no real gameplay, no challenge and the story is usually crap, and full of holes to boot. Then, having endured that minefield of gaming horror and come out in one piece, you find you've completed the game when you thought you'd just got started. No one wants to play the old LucasArts style adventure games anymore, for example, because people don't want to use their stupid brains when they play a game, they just want to relentlessly bash their PS2 controller to death trying to kill a 1,000,000 foot tall demon monster spawn of satan, using only a shotgun. Real time strategy is dying out, turn based strategy is totally dead in the water, and most video game players these days wouldn't even know what the hell you were talking about if you used the phrase "FPS". They'd probably think it was a gang - and this, no doubt, while they're playing the latest Medal Of Honour game, most likely called - Medal Of Honour - The Final Cash-In, subtitled "We're Really Milking It Now". Rant over.

On that other topic: I agree that games have become less and less of a challenge to the mind. The fact that TBSs and p'n'c adventures are pretty much dead illustrates that, I think. You don't learn from games anymore in my opinion, which is a shame. One thing that made games far better than movies (IMHO), was that you had to think on a level you don't have to anymore. Playing one of the today's games is too much like going back to the movies: Just sit back and watch, you don't have to think, everything's been taken care of for your convenience, so enjoy the ride. A roller coaster ride where every move is pre-planned and will happen in the same order every time, whether you like it or not.

[/b][/quote] True enough, but you don't want something quite as insulting to your intellect as: "You have to kill this entire army by yourself just because the game requires you to do so". Even though that is the essence of the games, I like to see someone make some sort of effort to make it feel vaguely like you've achieved something in the hours and hours you've spent perched infront of your computer/console, that you could've spent interacting with actual people. Plus a good plotline can tie together multiple bosses nicely. That said, no amount of a nice plotline accounts for weak gameplay. See the Ghost in the Shell: StandAlone Complex PS2 game for an example of that. |
