I think difficulty setting matters a lot. For difficult the increased cost of building slows down income growth especially at the start, and fewer industries make a big difference at the end.
Also, landscaping costs a lot of money. I guess the key is still how fast you can make money in the first 10 years.

Here is my latest attemp to complete this challenge as fast as possible. I decided to play with hard settings this time, and it was a very interesting game that I'm far from used to play.

I never used a road vehicle in this game. Only (very profitable) trains to start with, then the oil rigs appeared just before the recession. My classic strategy perfectly fitting in such a scenario, I then got into boats to bring the oil to the (strangely) lone rafinery at the other side of the map. Again this was quite profitable so early in the game. Afterward I went airplane to transport the goods from the rafinery to a far away town for some major profit. In the same time I managed to build another link of profit with wood and goods.

This map was very hilly. I don't remember playing on such a map before. Thankfully the computer was very dumb and none came close to having more than one million at any given time. Only one of them was good enough to manage some good profit and I immediatly merged those 3 passenger trains he built to my own empire. I need to remember in my future games that passenger trains are very profitable once you hit electric...

Another interesting point about the computer is that they kept trying to go airplane (probably because I was already hitting all the few good train spots) and this helped me a little with the hills since they kept flattening them in a strange attempt to place an airport near all the major cities. Since it was too costly for them a lot of them went bankrupt very fast. LOL

Points of interest in the game: laughing as a computer was going bankrupt at about every 5 game years, cursing as I made a mistake in mountain levelling and "wasted" a million trying to split the mountain in two and paying a million to my "far away town" for commercial buildings when they decided to stop receiving goods at the airport. Fortunatly it only took 2 game months for the airport to accept goods again.

Edit: for those who are interested in knowing this, I began playing at 17:30 and ended the game at 2:30. That's 9 hours and a half playing straight to get this record. I'm tired now.

Anyhow, here is my screenshot:

Ok took me two weeks to experiment and figure out what works, after trying several times to perfect strategy, I finally felt cofident to go for it.

I first focused three largest cities that were close together with trains, and also industries that were not too far apart with trains. That way I would reduce the amount of money used to changing the land.

I then went to boats and used trains for industries that were further apart.

As soon as the first plane that can carry 200 passengers appeared, I built airports next to the cities on the outer edges of the map, and flew passengers across the map to maximise distance, since a lot of the flying time is taken up by take-off and landing.

Instead of linking one farm to one factory, etc. I linked as many raw material industries to each factory, refinery, etc, to create a hub. These hubs are extremely efficient as cargo planes can just keep taking off to supply the cities, and again I flew the planes across the map to get mega income.

I have to say it was the hub building, and growing the cities early on that got me to 100Mil so fast. The background of the screenshot for example was two cities that grew so much they merged, and I was able to supply them with two airports.

Sorry, no idea how to show the screenshot here, so I just attaached it. Shows 14th Oct 1983. I think I will let the game run till I get 200mil, see how long that takes.

Very good, you beat me by a little less than 2 years. Damn, this mean I'll have to do it again if I want to be first again. I don't know when I'll have time tough.

I am adding you to the hall of fame right now.

Edit: How did you manage to get 51 trains? Company merge?

No idea, I just built them. It wouldn't let me have more than 40 planes. I didn't test what the limit was for other vehicles.

Trains were very important for me mid game. I built long industry connections that went half way across the map, and then used 4 trains to supply. In effect, the trains continously deliver like the ship strategy, but because they go faster more money is made.

Late game, I simply needed as many planes as possible.

Also, my map was a really nice map. I reloaded about 20 times until I found a map I thought would do well. The maps I used to practice with were not good, Industries too far apart, towns badly positioned or too small, etc.

There is also a cap on boats. I am wondering if we are all running the same version of the game. I know there is a free patch update which bring down a lot of bugs and new features to the game...

Definitely not worth a screenshot, but still a decent way to bump this thread: just over $ 100 million in december 1991.
But it had been 5 to 10 years since I played Transport Tycoon, and this is the first time I tried the Deluxe version.

To be continued, though I have no hopes of breaking the record. Yet I'd be happy reaching it before 1990.

With that score you would still be in 5th place. Worth posting if you ask me.

Your choice.
