I am going to provide some information which does not have high value for those who forgets about the game once it's done. I believe that mostly it is known by the experienced players, so it won't surprise them, too. On the other hand, it makes playing easier... and for me it wasn't easy to learn the second part.

First, the game has two ways of control: you can do everything using a mouse, but running and fighting is what you can do with only a keyboard (well, since the early versions keys F5, F6, F7, F8 do not cause any magic, but F1, F2, F3 are still available). So there are three possibilities, each fits its own situation.
a) Running-and-doing your quest (opening doors, chests, pressing buttons, trading etc.). Use arrow keys (7,8,9, sometimes maybe 4,6, of course at the right part of your keyboard) (left hand) and mouse in this case.
b) Running-and-fighting, when you just need to struggle your way through the packs of annoying but weak monsters. Use F1-F2-F3 (left hand) and arrow keys then.
c) Tough fighting - then you surely need a mouse, but still F1-F2-F3 are convenient.

Second, there are ways to make the fighting easier. There are two weapons that never fail: crossbow "Valkyre" and... a rock (when you throw it). (Exception: sometimes items become "unthrowable". I do not know why does it happen, but it is easy to notice that you can no longer throw your rock away. Then you can find another.) Of course, rock isn't usable to do considerable damages (though lesser Orcs die after 4-5 blows), but...
But the Lands' monsters have not only health but also shields. Health is constant for all creatures of the same kind, shields' value varies around half of the health. To kill the monster, you need to chop its shields off first. So if monster dies in a single blow, you can be sure this blow was no less than shields+health of that monster.
But shields always fade after a single lucky blow. If it was below shields' value, monster remains in full health, otherwise it becomes wounded...
Now you can see that even rocks may be useful against powerful monsters... Of course, not Larkhon, great Orcs and other creatures immune to bashing.
