I do love this game, how you set up chains for delivering things
best one I had was iron ore- steel mill (fast train) steel - to an island platform (big ferry) then to a factory (little train)
the ferry was v slow but as the fast train was quick it took MASISVE amounts of steel over meanin the small train was always full ^^

The game center essentially around trains. Get a few good train runs early and you can basically do whatever you want in the long term. I usually always start with a coal route.

hi, bene playing the game for a couple of days, and the centred around trains thing is actually slightly annoying, I wish other modes of transport were slightly more practical. Lorries/busses earn frankly pitiful amounts of $$!

still, as I think I have posted before, I do love this game.. Im thinking about getting locomotion (asking around to see what its like)

Well, it's not that it's really centered on trains... It's just that it's both the most easy and most efficient way to get cash. Later on, when the towns begin to grow, airplanes and buses are good too. In fact, I would never go really far in the game without airplanes.

You can read my Locomotion VS TTD article if you want.

bussses... hmm...
1. check for subsidiaries
2. build a road to next town (this is cheap)
3. establish a line (or a few) which will cost you only a little bit and bring back quite big profit.

so for only a little bit of money you get quite a lot.

Trains are efficient. again usually with some subsidiary. that's how it is in real life you know. my company exports most producs by train (or at least delivers them to warehouse where they are later loaded on a ship).

However ships, airplanes etc can also be very efficient in this game. i too made most money later by driving passenger with both fast & large plains.

Buses are also useful in keeping cities satisfied: you don't have to flatten half of the town before you can build a bus stop.
Especially later in the game, cities you haven't connected so far can get quite annoyed when you try to build an airport or train station right away.
I usually start by connecting some industries by train, then the largest cities, then link the smaller ones by bus. Heliports can also be nice if you've got too many passengers waiting at a bus stop; just build a heliport next to it, it takes only one square.

Imo aircraft only start being profitable once your cities have reached a decent size (well, a decent number of pax per month), and I hardly use aircraft before the big airports and 592 mph aircraft are available.

ever tried playing the desert/jungle area? well you can't afford to build the road to goldmines (it's too expencive on those terains). and those subsidiaries really pay good money. so best/cheapest way to get them is to get a modified plane that would carry the ore or money or whatever needs to be transported and two airports.

but in any other terain you are right. it's worth waiting a bit and get the plane when there are larger airports and faster/bigger planes available.

That's how you do it:

Quote:
Use the same buttons you're using to build (regular) railroads, but instead of left-clicking them, you have to either right-click them or keep your left mouse button down while dragging the mouse cursor down a bit so that a drop-down appears (been quite some years so I'm not sure which one of both is correct). This will give you the choice between railroad and monorail.

Thanks for help (holding LMB and dragging the cursor a bit down works). Thanks again.
