Ask Sebatianos, he is the new Carmen Sandiego peep in town. I'll say you how to get the HOTU version working when I have refreshed my mind - successfully troubleshooting many problems + bad memory =

:weird: I clearly remember the black screen issue, but now it's working like a Trojan (DOSBox and direct WinXP) freshly extracted from HOTU's archive.
