i had the same problem. first try slowing down the speed. i use DOSBOX where i press ctrl + f12 or f11. one speeds up the... well... speed; the other slows it down. then press the left arrow and only the left arrow first. when you gain enough speed (you can tell when the tail goes up) press up.

if your using a different dos emulator i dunno...

one trick i use is to press the right arrow and go to the right edge of the carrier. that way i have more allowance and space to gather speed and have time to press up when the tail goes up. i usually can just press left and up arrow at the beggining when i do this and still fly.

hope this helps

I played the game in it's original form.. to get the full magic you MUST get DosBox!

Also, the plane might not be taking off even if you are holding LEFT by itself and at the very end also holding UP simultaneously if you are trying to run it without DosBox because the program will not run right without DosBox in most computers.

Download DosBox and WOF (install too)
Put all of the WOF files in a folder righ on the C: drive (C:\newfolder)
Open DosBox
Type "mount c c:\newfolder" hit enter (just like this spaces and all)
If it says that the folder was mounted then type "c:" hit enter
then type WOFE
the game will start!!!

You can hit Ctrl F11 and Ctrl F12 to slow down and speed up the gameplay.

About four F11s give you the real speed

Can someone help?

When I start it in DOSBOX 0.65 it will abort just before you would normally see the first 'shot' of the ship and the plane.

I then end up with the closing message in dos that shows 'thank you for choosing the humble guys'.

When I try to restart it it refuses to work altogether

If I run it by selecting the .exe file in explorer everything works fine (except for the fact I am unable to play the game due to the speed problem)

For all of you how are unable to take off: You just need to gane enough speed during takeoff. As soon as the rear wheel (the small one on the right side of the plane) comes off the ship press the up-key and continue pressing the left-key. If for whatever reason you can't gain enough speed, taxi the plane to the end of the carrier on the right and start from there. By doing this you will have a longer runway.

Took me a while to get the hang off it in the early '90s.

As you're taxing down the carrier, hit down so your tail goes up--you need to do this to increase speed for takeoff.

What kind of bull is that? I never touched the down button during takeoff.
