Your computer is too fast. So you can't see your enemies approaching and attacking.
I use an additional slowdown program, called moslo to slow down my computer when playing this game. It works well on my K6-500.

Your party is probably too weak for random outdoor encounters, after the first fight you should try to follow the storyline and gain XP by random encounters in Throtl instead.

I didn't have problems with the first fight, a strong party should be able to win it without weapons, armor or using spells.
What is your party composition ?

Some hints to make your battles easier:

Don't roll your character stats, set the important stats like strength, dex,con and hitpoints to the maximum.

Sleep works very well against draconians, hobgoblins and other low level monsters. Hold person is great against humanoids. Stinking cloud can even paralyze high level monsters.

You can use the delay and guard commands in battles instead of running into your enemies and getting surrounded.

Attacks from behind get a big bonus.

Each character should be able to wear heavy armor and do so.
