Planescape Torment is also an excellent RPG, but I haven't played it in a long time and I just started BG again, so I guess the impression is more fresh...
BTW in BG you can make your own party without any NPC (although that takes some fun out of it), just pretend your hosting a multiplayer game and control all the 6 characters you made by yourself... NWN was a bit of a dissapointment I really didn't like the 3D engine, and the story was bad, I never tried multiplayer because of my connection restrictions...
