I try to play but it sort of plays itself.... The trucks zoom around by themselves, choose their upgrades themselves, and I pretty much bang the keyboard trying to figure out how to actually controll them. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Start the game and chose graphics/sound then no joystick.When game boots hit "A" for acceleration and you'll be able to enter name and begin!
