[/b][/quote] Wow, I still have my disc from... What is it now? 13 years ago? Somehow, impossibly enough, the CD has a minimum of scratches (compared to, say a disc I have from 10 years ago that is covered in so many scratches it's not even funny.) Anywho, fired up DOSBox, mounted the CD-ROM, and installed. Ok, so with the current version I'm using it definitely doesn't handle too well. The videos play fine and everything, but, the actual in-game part plays as if you were trying to run it on an underclocked 386. Definitely not doable. I tried VDMSound and did indeed see the same problems you've had. It doesn't seem to recognize the sound even when properly configured or something I think. As for the videos, it looks like some kind of file access problem to me, or maybe even the culprit is just simply the sound (it may use sound for syncing so without the sound it looses syncing and runs all frames at the max.) Anyway, this game needs to be played in DOSBox in Windows XP clearly. It's listed as playable, so I'm guessing you have to use an older version than I'm currently using (a CVS compile from just a few days ago.) Later on I'll try to see if I can track down what works best for it. Since it's listed as fully playable with no notes on speed problems it surely works in several versions without noticable issues. |

![]() With DosBox, try Dynamic Core and increasing the cyclecount. VDMSound is less compatibile then DosBox, so things like that happen. VDMS also uses most of your CPU's power for the game itself - some games may run unbearably high this way.

![]() i used to play this game ALL the time as a kid. i forgot how i how i had it back then. Floppy disk, maybe ?
Anyway, years ago, my brother got the Zork anthology, with this on it... but Return to Zork didnt work :tai: ... It made dos background noises, i think thats what its supposed to do, but the people didnt make any noises while talking, and talked REALLY fast. this was on our newer XPs, as we had gotten rid of our 98 a while ago. then, our XP stopped playing DOS games all together. i used Dos Box, but never thought of using it for Zork. Recently, i got a laptop. It used XP, and could run DOS games perfectly. I got dos box anyway, cause Star Con wouldnt work without it for some reason <_< ... And, lo and behold, it still didnt work. I then used Dos Box, after seeing you all talk about it here. Instead of the orb guy showing upblack bar a[ for 1 second, he didnt even show up. appeared for a second. and the people didnt make any noise, like before, but didnt move fast, which is a start :P... still the background music, though. SO... ANNOYING :wallbash: ... I WANT TO PLAY IT! I'VE BEEN WANTING TO FOR YEARS  Oh well, ya cant get everything <_< |

![]() It's hard to set up only the first couple times. After that, you'll be laughing how easy it turns out to be.
Give Dosbox a try, if you have any problems or questions I'm here to help. |
