No, I've stated this before so I guess I'll make it official on the thread that's in a way all about me. (Darn. There's never been a more appropiate less appropiate place for a grinning smiley ever before than right here.)

I view smiley like I view profanity. Unnecessary and stunting to the use of language. Did Hemmingway need smileys? Did Mark Twin's biting satire need smileys? Does J. K. Rowling need smileys? No. Their naritive and respective commentaries needed no assistant for people to understand their meaning. And yet if someone doesn't use smileys they come off as rude, condiscending, or lacking in a sense of humor. It's a visual laugh track, and I find laugh track insulting. Most people, however, now depend on the laugh track, just like most people now depend on smileys to know what's a joke.

When smileys first became popular people abused them so that a post like

became

You're a flaming sack of manure [/b]

This sort of thing came when you knew the person wasn't being all cutsey. IThey were being offensive. But they just thought that putting a smiley after it made it okay. You could be offensive to someone, but just don't admit you were being offensive. It was two-faced, insulting, and pretty transparent. So then and there I swore the things off. I decided I was going to develop my written wit the old fashoned way. I have been met with of reisitance, but being who I am stubornly refuse to give way except in rare occasion. Generally the only times I will use smiley's is to (1) make fun of the use of smileys or (2) soften the blow if I'm more concerned with my message getting across than I am about keeping my lonely vigil.

So there you have it. This thread now just about spells out me in a nutshell. My avatar, my writing habits, and if you want to know about my sig there's a link in it that explains that too.

I tell you what. I've notived that people have been reacting to my posts less frendly-like and it's may not be just from my lack of smileys. So from here on out I'm going to turn over a new leaf. I promise before everyone reading this that I will, from now on... no, I'm not going to start using smileys. But I am going to start being less critical of other posters, less crass and mean. I will pass up oportunites to point out what others are doing that isn't "right" in my opinion. I will work to craft my satircal responces to be funny, and not at anyone's expense, and I will not respond to flame the first person who "doesn't get it." I will, in short, work to be more pleasant person to be around in the Abandonia community.

As such I expect my post count to slow down considerably.
