Hi,

I have tried to play this game. But everytime (in the very beginning of the game) when I go to the tarven and "Sign In", the game would hang. I suspect it will be the same whenever I visit blacksmith or whatever shops.

I have tried playing with VDM sound (on go.bat) and had tried Dosbox (with and without sound). But it always hang at the same place. BTW, my laptop is running xp.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

First of all, I'd like to mention that Warrior mode is the standard mode and Adventurer is the easy mode, in which enemies do less damage, take more damage, and are in lesser numbers. I highly recommend playing Warrior mode as it's much more balanced (unless you want to play easy).

About running it on DOS-Box, if you set the CPU cycles to 8000, the game runs at exactly the speed it's supposed to (if you set it to 8000 BEFORE running Xeen.exe then the music will play at the speed it's supposed to as well, with some framerate slowdown when there are a bunch of enemies on the screen). Anything higher than 8000 will make it run slower than the default CPU cycles.

I bought it with the Might and Magic IV: Special Edition with music set to Roland GS (IMO, it's WAAAY better than the quality of soundblaster music setting, and this is on a Soundblaster card) and sound set to Soundblaster Pro, and it runs flawlessly under DOS-box. I'm up to the Great Northern Tower on the Darkside and I have yet to encounter any of the fatal errors, freezing, or doom glitches you guys have spoken of (on any sound setting).

And now to my question, how do you answer to the Chalice in the great northern tower? I've tried all the obvious answers, and now I'm stumped (I figured out all the vowelless riddles thought).

Here are some sources of information:

http://www.rpgclassics.com/shrines/pc/mm4_5/index.shtml
You can also download the official manual and cluebook for MM4 at http://www.replacementdocs.com.
At www.gamefaqs.com you can also find some walkthroughs.

Some additional hints from me:

- you can save and reload at nearly any time. Do so. Save after each successful battle. Reload when a party member died or got poisoned or something else you can't cure immediately without having to pay in a temple.
- The items you find are random. So you can save before searching something or getting a quest reward and reload to get something more useful. An obsidian weapon is more far useful than a ring which grants 30 electric resistance which only helps against electricity using enemies for example.
- Use the fountains once you found them. Once the town fountains are free they can help a lot.
- Use the buffing spells like heroism and shield. "day of protection" and "day of sorcery" are a very useful shortcut. Just buff your party in the morning so that the spells last long.
- "protection from elements" is extremely useful. Cast it even after "day of protection" if you are going to face hard enemies using this element. Monsters doing up to 25 fire damage can't hurt the party if the fire protection was cast by a level 10 caster. And if shield is also cast then even more damage is ignored.
- against enemies without missile weapons in towns you can use the shoot or cast-jump-shoot or cast-jump tactic if you have the jump spell to hurt them without getting hit.
- If you meet some enemies you can't defeat physically it might be wise to explore another part of the game first.
- A way to gain many XP and great items: If you plunder some chests in castle Burlock a Royal guard attacks (doing cold damage). But you'll also get attacked if you only try to open the chests, so if you have someone else than your thief or ninja try to open the chest without success, you can make make them appear endlessly and kill them for XP and items. If you have buffed up your party and used protection from cold they shouldn't be too hard. But keep in mind that you have to fight your way out of the castle without a chance for resting unless you have a "Lloyd's Beacon" spell.

The procedure before too hard dungeons: Set a "Lloyd's Beacon" there. Start at at the nightshadow town well at 5 o'clock early in the morning, so that the effects will last for nearly 24 hours. Drink for gaining the 10 levels, cast the buffing spells afterwards and teleport to the other town through the mirrors to get all the other buffs and refresh your HP and MP. After using the "Lloyd's Beacon" spell again your party should be fully buffed and have more than full magic and hit points and at least 22 hours time untill the buffs run out.
If you haven't freed the town wells or are going to face extremely hard enemies you have to use additional wells in the wilderness. The jump and the teleport spells might help avoiding to waste too much time outside. Moving, spellcasting or pressing the space key takes only 1 minute inside but 10 minutes outside.

Use the "Lloyd's Beacon" spell to travel back and forth between the area you are exploring and a save town.

Create a strong party. You'll want to have:
- 1 barbarian, since barbarian is the class which does the most physical damage by far
- 1 thief or ninja
- 1 archer or mage for mage spells
- 1 druid or ranger for druidic spells
- 1 cleric or paladin for cleric spells
- 1 paladin or knight for being able to use all weapons you find.

A suggestion for a party containing all races and no double-class:
Half-orc Barbarian
Half-orc Knight
Dwarf Thief
Elf Archer
Gnome Cleric
Human Ranger

With a little patience you should be able to roll good stats which will make the beginning of the game easier.

^ IMO the most balanced party choice is the basic Paladin, Knight/Barbarian, Sorceror, Ranger, Ninja/Robber, Cleric.

Nevermind my question about the chalice, I figured it out soon after asking (I could've sworn I tried Chalice with no consonants, twice)

Also it turns out 7000 CPU cycles is best, same speed as 8000 with less slowdown.
Frameskip is bad, it just makes everything choppy and doesn't really help at all. If you're using dosbox use Ctrl+F12 until it reads 7000 CPU cycles in the blue bar.

Another question, my characters are now level 55 and I have 4 million gold in the bank, how long is that going to last me once the real training starts?

Everyone who plays this game should buy the Might and Magic Compendium, it introduces the story behind 1 and 2, and is a walkthrough for 3, 4 and 5 whenever you might need any assistance. It also has complete stats on every monster, every skill and every spell. And you can get it for about $10 (about 300+ pages).
I'll also add that it includes a very exclusive interview with JVC about all his games up to 1995 (the year before Heroes). This guy has 2 games in the CGW hall of fame (cool).
