I see that this issue has appeared already on this topic, but I haven't found any workable solution.

For Celtic Tales, the game is incredibly slow on DOSbox for me. While having no trouble installing/running the game itself, it is simply very slow. Increasing the CPU cycle rate didn't work for me (I ctrl-F12'd until it reached over a million, then just gave up). Is there some other method of improving the speed/or normalizing it? I've seen suggestions of giving it more 'virtual memory,' but unfortunately I'm unsure how to do this, as I'm still new to DOSbox.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

C.J.

(sorry if this is a redundant annoyance to anyone)

I don't honestly believe i'll get a reply but here it goes:

My game runs fine on DosBOX but the image is very bad, kinda like a pre-vga/ EGA (?) colour image. Is this some setting I can change or what?

It runs fine for me in DOSbox, and perfectly in VDMS (well, slightly fast).

Maybe that's because I installed the actual official release, that comes in the box.

It's pretty cheap to pick up new on ebay... I rarely buy games, but I loved 'Balor' enough to pick it up.

Has anyone read the novel? I just bought it off ebay and am waiting for it to arrive.

Hey, so anyway, I'm one of the people who is only midly techincal and had problems getting this to run smoothly in dosbox. Anyways, here's how i fixed. Get a front end program for dos box through the links on their site. Change yuor CPU to dynamic, increase the cycles from 3000 to about 12000. Also I gave it 32 MB of memory instead of 16 MB. (All this stuff is straight forward if you are in one of the front ends.) Anyways, then it ran perfectly on my P4 1.8 GHz with 256 MB of ram, running XP home. Hope that helps someone, cause this game is amazing. (Top three picks for me would be this, Xcom and Ascendancy..... make sure you check the last one out...... amzing)

Hi, Celtic Tale is one of my favorite game and I want to share the experience.
(Sorry if I write the name of champion or province in wrongful way because I played this game for a long time)

I have played it for at last 10 round by choosing many different leaders. I admit that it may not be the best strategy game, but it is vey original and have rich context. I always fastinate that KOEI can adapt Irish mythology into the simple gameplay, very realistic according to the culture and society of that age.

For the first time I played as mannanan. At that time I didn't know how to play it. I didn't know even this game is based on Irish mythology, just thought it is a very unique fairy tale.

I tried to play peacefuly for about 12 years, did not wage war on any tribe, only gave others tributes and hope that they will join my tribe themselves. I also let my champion play hurling every months.
At the 12th years when all of my champions were extremely strong and I was desparating to beat the game. The tribe of Sinan Og, which have 100 peace points with me, was start attacking me first.

Therefore, I was very angry and strike back, I won the war and I found that at that time the tribe of Sinnan Og was almost conquer all Eire, except my province. Since I have an extremely strong warrior group. I enjoyed destroy the Sinnan's provinces one by one and beat the game in one year. At that time, I also didn't know how to use spell, therefore I prefered to used only strong warrior in war. It was a bit hard, but not too hard.

After mananan, I played as Calatin, Angus Og, Lugh, Finn,Cuchulain,Sinan Og. I found that the game of Finn is the easiest and the game of Lugh is the most fun (may be because it is the hardest).

When I played as Lugh. I was so perfectionist that build every province reach 47 point both by culture and power, make sure that all of the 39 provinces (I left one province for not winning the game) have enough resource, make sure that there are at least 3 champions who have something relate with one the other in every provinces, and make sure that every champion has the finest tool. To reach this state, I have to play about 22 years mainly because I was just waiting for collect all of Danu'd gifts.

In the other way, when I played as Calatin, I made my tribe a killer machine that plundered every province, exile anyone whom I didn't like or disobey me. I never owned any province for a long time, just move a long the island and destroy every authorities until there was no other tribes left.

I found that Nanagh (the 40th province) has the finest location and usually use it as the capitol. (However, according to the legen, Tara the 11th province is the capitol.) and I (though that I) had a full list of the spell but I lost it somewhere in my house but the list provided by this site is quite cool.

I also think the most beautiful woman in this game is Sabh, the warrior woman in Finn's tribe (and also his wife, according to the legend.) and the most handsome man is Gwynn the warrior in the red tone picture.
(After I read some Irish mythology books, I remembered he was a secondary character in some tale.)

Finally, According to the legend, there are three character that can consider the main character of this game, that are Finn, Lugh, and Cuhulain.

Finn is the leader of Irish tribe that fought with viking in order to protect Ireland.
Lugh is the god of the sun who actually kill Balor and Cuhulain is the most remakeble hero of Irish mythology. All of them have their own legend, occured in the difference time in Irish history.

For other leader character,
Angus Og is the cupid of Irish mythology. He is the wise and fair one.
Mebb (of Silgo) is the antagonist in Chuhulain's legend. She is the one who kill him.
Calatin is only a simple druid from some tale that I don't remember, I wonder how he gain status as a ruler.
Mananan is the god of sea.
Conchobur is the leader of Chuhulain's tribe.
Nueda is the first leader of the god's tribe.
Morrigan is the goddess of war.

Hi. Does anyone else find it utterly retarded that the only way to learn some (if not most spells) of the spells in this game is through experimentation (through 256 combinations of ruins no less!) or just reading them off somebody else's list? Whereas, all the CPUs seem to know every spell beforehand. WTF?

I'm trying to play the game where I only use spells I've bought from travelling druids, but this is a pain in the behind as the CPU would utterly pwn me early on with their spells, while my own casters feebly try to attack them hand to hand. Worse still, there are some spells that seemingly cannot be learned without testing out every combination of runes, particularly the Bard ones. If it wasn't for the CPU's completely inability to protect their leaders, it'd be nigh impossible to win any battles this way.

Anyone else tried playing this way, and is it even possible to win the game without so many spells?
[/b]
Back when I played the game originally I had no list of the spells, but was able to learn most of them through trial and error. There is a certain logic to how the runes work if you know their names (which were given in the manual, if i remember right).

I was able to buy some spells, and tease out enough of the others through trial and error to defeat the game pretty easily.

You can get pretty far exploiting the same weakness every KOEI game has: the AI can't cope with a player using a "scorched earth" policy. Raise a huge army in one province, and move around attacking and plundering to raise a bigger army. Move all the troops and goods out of the old provinces to the recently plundered one, and don't worry if the computer takes your old ones, because it can't do anything with it because it has no resources. When you've suitably weakened the whole map, start building a real kingdom.

hehe Dude!. ive got the perfect thing for you and you all that gets only black screens and such in dosbox, this works with most of the games

instead of launching game with the dosbox, try dragging it 2 the dosbox.exe file. thats all it is 2 it, all problems solved..easy enough =)

so for a more closer descript

drag the koei.bat file in windows 2 the dosbox.exe file (doesnt matter what version) and the game will launch with sound and everything =), spread the word
