@gregor: Though that old person is used to the IE - does he really use features of it? Doesn't he just need the adress-bar where the URL is put in and a program to display internet content?
Then you could really give him Opera. I'm not quite certain where the bookmarks are kept in Opera, but that shouldn't be much of a problem.
