for me it's like that:
if i play adventure then near the star it says "(press: enter)". press enter it everything will solve. if it says otherwise, howewer, it's beyond my expertice. sorry
if i play melee, it asks for a star. i just type any letter, press enter and it works. if it doesn't, then i can't help you . sorry!

B.t.w.: don't read resource guide unless you need it badly (read about thraddash: forming alliance, and (if you need it!) slylandro: locating their homeworld (i won the game with only those two)! there are a lot of bio units around and minerals in ilwhath space. also, in big planet's (like Alpha Centauri or Zeeman) if you bought upgrades from melnorme, you can try you're luck.
