It's really not neccessary to reach level 200+ in the game. If you feel invincible you can prove this by defeating the megadragon.
Before you can open a chest in an elemental plane you have to succeed with the test there.

In castle Alamar you should have found a key to the dragon tower on the clouds side, it might be worth a visit.
[/b]
Haha, I meant I'm invincible against the more common enemies. With Day of Protection and Power Shield, I hardly need to sweat when taking them on. The Megadragon, however, is another story... :tai:

Anyway, I tried what you suggested and accepted the elemental tests, then opened the chests... I realised that it's hardly worth the damage I receive. Just 1000 gold and some lousy elemental equipment. I reloaded and decided not to open those chests.

Thanks, I'll check out Dragon Tower. I can't remember if I rescued Roland though. I had explored the dungeon in Alamar's Castle last time (before finding the Dragon Pharaoh and slaying Alamar) and I have no idea if I saved Roland. Looks like I gotta check out that place again...

Receiving damage shouldn't be a problem. Just put off your armor if you fear getting into the negatives. Resting should easily heal your HP for free, the elemental items can at least be sold for a little money.
You should be able to buff up your party enough to handle the damage without someone dying.
You can return when you're more experienced if you don't want to do the whole buffing procedure now.

I used to play this game back in the day. And I've been looking for it since my win.98 died, and got a new windows vista system. This game I think is better than halo in some ways. This game was the halo of 1992. And is still hot.halo cant say that! I went through a lot of web sites that were bogus.(charged my credit card and then gave me a download site that didnt exist). They pissed me off so I hacked there server, took the site down and I put a joker on there system.Which if you dont know what that is it's a virus which cuts off there mouse and keyboard and will not allow it to restart.hahaha that showed em not to *meep* with me! But this site is good...and free! Thank you abandonia.com!

Whoa, talk about nostalgia.. spent many many hours on xeen when i was a kid.

Is World of Xeen the one where the portal asks you 'Where to?' in speech (i.e. not text)?

Hi,

I could provide the german copy protection codes that someone requested some time ago. Would it be okay to post them in the forum? Or would it be better to not post them?

I have the "Bestseller Games" version of both games, too. For those who don't know what "Bestseller Games" is: It was a German magazine that featured full games only, i.e. no (or almost no) editorial content but only the game, instructions, and, also the walkthrough for games that needed them. Back in the late nineties that was a great opportunity to obtain cheap games (they cost around 6-10€ per issue)

I remember this game from when I was a kid- playing through it two times recently reminds me of how much easier the game is when you know where everything is.

One tip that I'm not sure anyone has mentioned: interest rates on Xeen are very good. You'll inevitably run out of money for training in the late game- if you kill Barkman, though, that should give you enough gold to train to at least level 50, which can get you through Darkside (particularly the Great Pyramid where there's a huge treasure pile) and then the Dragon Tower where there's a lot more treasure. Then (probably before you go to the Dragon Clouds) just put all of this gold in the bank and go work (Castleview/Rivercity/Vertigo, I think) for the next 25 (or so) years. 25 years multiplies your money by about a factor of 15, and 50 million gold (which you won't have any trouble accumulating with this strategy) is easily enough to train all of your characters to level 120. Aging penalties start around age 35, but don't kick in a second time until about 50, so you'll only have a few stats go down with this strategy.

This sure beats endless trips to the Gemstone Mines, or enchanting and selling items all day! It was particularly amusing that I had so much gold left over that I could pay the 4 million gold in the Southern Sphinx to be protected from the traps and then walk right through them.

For me it sounds crazy rushing through the game in order to avoid aging (24 is quite young to finish DS) and giving away 25 years afterwards to gain a little money.

I think the primary reason people take a lot of game time to finish the game is that they don't realize that going to shops takes a day and/or they rest when they could just visit fountains (Vertigo/Rivercity being the easiest) to restore sp/hp. If you're judicious about not going to shops often or resting, the game is very quick.

Also, aging penalties at 35 are very mild- something like -2 physical ability scores, +1 mental ability scores. Then you don't suffer any more aging penalties until around age 50. I'd trade -2 physical ability scores for +40 levels of training any day.

It's more than a little money- I ended up with 120 million gold at age 46 (from 7.3 million at age 18) the last time I did this. My concern is minimizing real time, not game time. If you want to avoid running out of gold for training, I don't see any faster real-time way to do it.

You are probably right about this being the fastest real-time way to get money, but for me it's just no option. A sidegoal for me is turning my heroes into super characters with a very promising future, and draining 28 years of lifespan just hurts, I'd rather finish the game with level 80 characters.

The stat penalties don't really hurt, even if the characters get 80 years old. Natural aging isn't reversible in the game and the characters die when they get too old. If you run out of money there are ways to fix it, but if run out of time it's over. Therefore I'm very careful about aging.
The final score als depends mainly on the in-game time you needed to complete the game.

But that's just my personal way to play, different players play differently.
What party did you choose ?

I never thought about the score depending on the in-game time you need to complete the game. I suppose that since I had no idea what the formula to come up with a score is I never knew if my score was "good" so I didn't pay any attention to it.

I chose one of the most martial parties possible- 3 Half Orc Barbarians, 1 Dwarf Ninja, 1 Human Paladin, 1 Human Archer. In retrospect, replacing a Barbarian with another Archer might have sped things up in real time because having 2 Lloyd's Beacons is nice and my party was never challenged by fights as it was.

My goal was to win as fast as possible in real-time. I sped up play with Count Du Money and Shangri-La (I drew the line at Lord Xeen and I Lost It- didn't use those).

Initial strategy: Go immediately to Darkside, create party at level 5, solve the puzzles in and right around Castleview (buy Lloyd's Beacon), use Count-Du Money for gold and then Shangri-la to get key spells (Days spells, Town Portal, Lloyd's Beacon, Teleport). Solve Vertigo, train to level 10, go back to Count Du Money and teleport your way into main Dragon Cave treasure room (save until you get 2 Obsidian weapons), head to Dwarf mines 1-4 for stat bonuses (maybe unnecessary with Obsidian weapons)-> this gets you high enough Int for Archer to have 40 sp for Day of Sorcery- rest, cast it then go to Rivercity and beat Sorceresses, return Barok's pendant, drink from well to get enough SP for Day of Protection (cast it).

Rampage through Nightshadow. Drink from fountain for +10 levels. Commence world-beating.
