Everytime you enter a town, look for the alchemist, and offer to trade formulaes. This way, you can learn every single formulae in the game. The first character in the roaster gets the formula, this is why my leader/alchemy guy is first...
For those who prefer a non-alchemy leader, it's a simple matter to switch the leadership position before entering and after leaving the local alchemist's shop. I typically play with the following:
One extremely charismatic leader, a nobleman with good fighting skills.
One slightly older (ie, attributes a bit decayed) alchemist.
One slightly older (ie, attributes a bit decayed) religious type.
One grizzled veteran with excellent fighting skills. Good at lockpicks, too.
...So I've traded off attributes for a boost to my alchemist's alchemy abilities early in the game. With my best fighters on the ends I can move them forward, flanking, into a battle, and form a single party of the other two who are weaker.

That is true, but regardless of who is your leader, the first guy gets the formula, IIRC...
I haven't tried parties with characters older than 20, for I like challenges, especially regarding equipment...
