I have plenty of depots. They do not influence the population growth at all. It works like this:
I have only the castle -> every minute one settler is born there.
I have the castle and 4 depots -> every 5 minutes one settler is born in each of them.
The depots basically only help to reduce the traffic that would occur if every single settler or item would have to go through it.

The manual states otherwise.
The only advantage of meat over bread is that the butcher is much faster in making meat than the baker is in making bread so that one butcher can handle several pig-farms deliveries.
The disadvantage is, that a pig farm does not produce a 1:1 corn->pig ratio (the ratio is obviously slightly lower but there are no figures in the manual) and thus lacks a bit in overall efficiency.
It is even said, that if you have enough land, bread is clearly favourable over meat!

Edit (not possible because not registered):
I abandoned that game anyways. From the recent progress it appears, that it would take several days if not weeks of mere playtime until the map is fully colonized. Add to that that beeing able to successfully attacking the others requires gigantic amounts of gold wich I wouldn't have until every last mined gold was refined and you get something like a whole month of lifetime doing nothing but playing one single game of "The Settlers". Where playing can be replaced by: Giving some orders, waiting for an hour or until they are executed, giving some more orders, rinse repeat.

I think i'll better try the missions or another map that will not be bigger than 5 which honestly still is more than enough for a relatively fast paced game.

Maybe i should give you some tips: First you should change this statistics for transport(I mean the way Items are carried) and for the castle. Then you should expand as fast as possible, build always next to the border to get most land. First you should collect some wood and stones for your buildings. After that you should build mines to get swords and gold. Gold is very important for the moral of your army If you got all Tech Trees simply go for Soldiers. But a game may take several days, especially in the harder Levels. And always make a good way system. I think it is the best to make clusters(?). Sorry for my bad english

Hi, I've got a problem running this great game. Whenever I start it, the graphics are corrupted, and when i try to run it with DOSbox, it says that it needs the file sndstup.dat. The .DAT file is there, and when i ask DOSBox to list all the files, it recognize it all right, but still won't accept it when i call the SETT.exe.

I also tried VDMSound but it just put out an errormessage stating that my system was not made for DOS-based programs or something like that. Anyway, it kept me from playing Prince of Persia so i uninstalled it (VDMSound, not settlers).
I'm Running XP by the way

You definitly did something wrong then which is not directly linked to VDMSound.

Hey fellas,

I love this game, I just downloaded it again to play. My problem is I can't destroy any of my buildings (before they are even built) or roads. The button I know is there on the menu in the bottom bar, but when I click on it, nothing happens.

Am I suppose to do something else? I remember just being able to click and it was done.

IF anyone could help I'd love it,
Thanks.

you need to press both buttons at once to delete things. Its a kind of security thing, so you donīt burn down anything you didnīt want to.
Same is for evacuating your castle and storagethings.

Playing this game is so emotional to me. One of the first PC games I played, and played with my brother (as I seemed to mention before). Thank you thousand times for sharing this game!
