it's like wizardry, turn based..

i played world of xeen many many years ago, anyone knows how to beat the dragon (i don't know what it was named, it nearly instantly kills your characters and makes them unreviable) in the clouds? you have to cast flying to get there and it guards a trap-door..

I believe you're talking about the Megadragon on top of Alamar's castle on the Darkside?

You've need to have at least two Cleric-types in the party (I had a Cleric and a Paladin) to keep casting Divine Intervention (when people die) and Resurrection (When people get eradicated).

I managed to do it, but that was some 12 years ago. I also think my characters were absurdly high level.

It's actually even possible to defeat this dragon without a character dying.

He attacks with energy, so for the defense try to get up the the energy resistance and luck stat by visiting locations which raise them temporary as much as possible, do also get the character levels up before casting "Shield" or "DoS" to reduce the damage as much as possible. This way eradication hardly ever happens since only little damage will get through.

Offensive buffing with wells, shrines and spells is also very useful.

The sorcerer spell which makes dragons sleep and and the cleric spell which halves enemy hitpoints are very useful in the battle.

I was under the impression that the Megadragon is immune to these spells (and everything besides physical damage). I just tried fighting the Megadragon and Mass Distortion didn't work any of the times I tried it. My Archer didn't have Dragon Sleep so I didn't try that one. To beat the Megadragon without anyone dying, you need to get lucky.

I took my party of 3 HOrc Barbs, 1 Dwarf Ninja, 1 Human Paladin, 1 Human Archer (Paladin level 150, rest level 110) and visited the the +50 level fountain on Dragon Cloud, the fountain in Vertigo for full HP, the A1 fountain for +2500 HP, the +all resistances fountain in B1, and the +100 luck fountain in B4 and cast (post-level buff) Day of Sorcery and Day of Protection. I remember fighting the Megadragon 10-12 times- of those I only lost one fight but I think I only beat it without a character dying once or twice. Typically I'd lose 1-3 party members. Obsidian Dragon Slaying weapons could help shorten the fight but your resistance/protection is never going to get high enough that the Megadragon can't damage you, so there's always a chance of Eradication.

Edit- I forgot- if you want the best chance to beat the Megadragon without having anyone die, you can get a ton of Kinetic Items from one of the merchants on Gem Lake in the skyroads.

The Megadragon is resistant to "Mass Distortion" and "Dragon Sleep", but not immune. (at least in my version)
Even if many attempts will fail, the chance to inflict up to 32,000 HP damage or to make it miss one attack opportunity is well worth it, especially since casters do lousy physical damage compared to barbarians.

I was curious if anyone knew how the combat mechanics worked, more specifically how significant the advantage is with having an obsidian weapon. Aside from the bonus to hit value, I'm wondering what exactly the +50 to damange entails. I guess the main question would be if this number is simply an addition after your damage calculation, or if its integrated into your calculation where more importantly if it is involved in any "multiplication" type of formula. My guess considering some tests with "Identify Monster" seems to indicate its NOT just a simple added bonus of +50 damage but some sort of multiplication factor based on your Level. This will sound a little obscure I admit but I wanted a party with all Platinum equipment and was wondering exactly how much of a disadvantage I would have with an identical party using Obsidian equipment. Thanks in advance for any help.

The damage bonus obviously applies to all attacks per round the character has. Don't forget that Obsidian weapons also get a to hit bonus.
I've got the impression that AC somehow subtracts from the damage dealt, so if the AC subtracts 1,000 from damage dealt an attacker capable of doing 1,500 damage will get 10 times the effect an attacker capable of doing 1,050 damage. You probably already realized that a barbarian does more than twice the damage than a paladin, although he get's less than 1.5 times the attacks.

I guess the game is surely playable with platinum weapons, the lower weapon damage just has to be evened out by more attacks per round (higher levels) or more spell use.

pedro- the code sheet you can get in this thread works for everything on the Clouds side (although it may take you a few tries). The only place on Darkside where you need a code (from what I remember) is leaving Castleview through the gate. You can always Town Portal to just outside the city, or go out through the Sewers. I'm pretty sure that the Castleview code check doesn't get activated until you've completed some segment of the game (maybe based on the Clouds side?) so by then you should have Town Portal.

Soaks a couple of hours in anyway, don't it?
Praise Mok for those star trek references in darkside.
Those precious moments of eye rolling were about all the reality I got until I finished the thing.

Oh YEA! World of Xeen totally owns. I remember playing it as a kid when I was still in Primary School (Elementary School equivalent).

And I agree that MM6 is by the best of the series. It really is a shame that the sequels turned out mediocre :tai: I'm still hoping and praying (now that Ubisoft has acquired the rights to JVC's brainchild) that Might and Magic X will be made and take the world by storm as it did in 1997.

Anyway, back to discussing WoX. One of the biggest annoyances I faced playing MM4 & MM5 (especially towards the end of the game) is that while your characters are now really, really powerful, there's just no one left for them to pulverise, except the Megadragon (and in which case the party normally is the one that gets pulverised).

While it's a small problem, it does affect the replayability of the game somewhat. This of course is unlike MM6 where monsters keep respawning and nothing beats the feeling of felling the almighty Titans with meteor showers and blasters over and over and over again; or unlike MM2 where random encounters mean that there will be no shortage of posteriors to kick.

Another problem also about MM4 & MM5 is the shortage of gold during late game. Once you hit Lv 120+, the cost for training becomes incredulously astronomical and unless you cheat, there does not seem to be enough gold to finish training. Or perhaps that's just me :P Does anyone know of any tips to ensure a constant flow of gold?

One of my gold-making schemes is to buy Plate Armours, enchant them and sell 'em back. However, gems are also in limited supply and this process is painstaking at best. I'd be most grateful if anyone could give me some tips and tricks on how to make more money. Thanks
