yeah, this game has a pretty nasty learning curve if you don't know the controls. At one point I had to google for the controls...
I always picked an upgrade in warfare because I always sucked so bad at it, but my dueling skills were tight so I always went to assassinate people. Much more fun playing the ninja-type

Hey gang,

Cannot get the game to start, it starts but locks up at the title screen (Right before the title is supposed to flash)...anyone know?[/b]
It will work on if you wait, but actually it's fixed in the 0.70 version of DOSBox so it shouldn't happen if you upgrade.

If I remember right alarms worked the same way in all kinds of missions. The alarm will be triggered when you're seen by the enemy for longer than a couple of seconds, or when a dead body you leave behind is seen. It's very difficult not to set the alarm, you don't need to be so stealthy.

Hi. Thank you.

I have a pentium 1 with Windows 98. I run the game from Windows and it runs superb. But if i want to play it with sound it works but without sound. So maybe in the missions where you must not set the alarm on you must be careful on what you walk. I think that different floors make different sounds. I was in an assasination mission and i was in a room without nobody seeing me. And there was no body around. Cause i just entered the castle. I saw an enemy unit walking around but he didn`t saw me. After i made a few stepts the alarm was set on. That`s why i think that the sound has something to do with it.

And i have another question. Please tell me if the objective of a Disguised As A Ronnin mission is always at the top floor of the castle. For example. When i try to assasinate someone i always look in the entire castle. If the objective is always at the top floor of the castle i`ll just look for the stairs.

I think it's possible that the objective is not on the top floor but I'm not sure right now, I think I've seen it but don't take my word for it.

Thanks for the game reminded me of years long past.

Anyway, duels are bloody easy at any difficulty. You just keep enter pressed (unless moving) and use left or right arrow. He will parry most of the strikes, but sometimes he moves back or decides to change action, and will get hit.

Whenever he moves back you move forward. Stick to him. When he can't move back anymore, instead of getting hit once, most of the time you can do 3 hits in a row without him blocking.

You can use down arrow by holding it for a while and wait until you draw your sword back. It does 2 stroke damage and is unblockable. But the time you have to wait makes you vulnerable and you can't move. So not a good idea.

Up arrow is fast like left or right arrow, but recovery is slower and you may get counter hit by opponent.

If you have a laptop there's no need to use keypad, just use arrow keys.

Combat definitely needs improvement.

Melee is horribly painful at highest difficulty and a little less at second highest difficulty.

At highest difficulty the pike men swing a lot, and the number of enemies increase by at least a factor of two compared to second highest difficulty.

You basically can only get hit once. Being slowed = death.

I can't do any melee missions at highest difficulty.

Battle is pretty easy. Don't know why they coded such a poor AI system.

I hate that I can't pause the game to give orders, have to do it in real time with a poor interface.

A classic game indeed.

I'm very tempted to try a remake myself - I have this idea for simple pre-rendered backdrops for the various menus and choices.

I'm wondering how much little to change in terms of the rest of the game. I'm worried that if I tried to change too much its not going to retain the simple charm of the old game - but I'd really like to avoid it being as simple as a direct graphical upgrade.

What do you think? What would you change?
[/b]

I would be so happy with just a graphical remake. Later one can think of even improving such a perfect game.
Perhaps more 'random plot' events should be an easy addition.

If you are going for a remake [please, please!!] I'm more then willing to help out in any way I can.

fg,
Thijs
