It sounds to me actually like Elder Scrolls - Arena. Check out the screenshots here: Abandonia and Mobygames and see if that's it. The knights that you mentioned might be the guards that spawn and come after you if you attack someone in town or try to pick a door lock without success / enter a house where the door was locked.

Perhaps the game is Strife by Rogue Entertainment?

Not quite fifteen years old. Features a fist with a dagger/brass knuckle melee attack.
