![]() um, you realy need a graphic adapter to see anything on your monitor. you think there's a little hobbit which translates cpu instructions to monitor controller or what?
mm: you could have in-built graphic adapter

![]() Wikipedia (If it's correct.) - A video card, also referred to as a graphics accelerator card, display adapter, graphics card, and numerous other terms, is an item of personal computer hardware whose function is to generate and output images to a display. It operates on similar principles as a sound card or other peripheral devices.
Meaning, yes, you need a graphics card to see things on your monitor. |

You need a graphic chip would be more appropiate, the first ones didn't had a 'graphic card'. [/nitpicking mood]

the chip is never standalone itself, it always comes along with it's own translator for instructions set for normal assembler, so it's always some kind of set of stuffies on a bus, call it graphic adapter or graphic card or GPU (let it be geeforce 4 or your motherboard), otherwise it wouldn't be able to communicate with other hardware [/nit lame] btw yeah shared mem sucks, i can tell
