DOSShell is only one of several frontends for DOSBox.
Outdated one, at that - I sincerely doubt it would work well with the current version of DOSBox.

It's not difficult to learn how to operate DOSBox without frontends - if multi-purpose is your thing, you can set up a copy of Norton Commander within DOSBox itself, with 100% compatibility for every DOSBox version (the GUI was meant for the original DOS, but works perfectly fine with DOSBox).
Otherwise, you can create customized shortcuts and config files to start specific games or programs just by double-clicking on the shortcut. Been there, done that - it sounds more difficult than it is, and becomes quite easy after you set up five or so games that way (did it for over 70 myself).

what?! i wonder what kind of strange things were you doing. nothing slows down when you need to speed up. and horseman is right, pure dosbox is better than frontends

Frontends provide a fool-proof user interface, but don't automagically make DOSBox better.
Everything a frontend can do with DOSBox configuration, you can do yourself with a little effort. To speed up DOSBox you first set the Core to Dynamic and Cycles to Max. Then you can change the output mode, set a lower fullscreen resolution (640x480 recommended), increase frameskip (frameskip=1 gives no practical difference, frameskip=2 or 3 might result in a slight choppiness of the graphics but will speed them up even more), disable scalers (for games that use a lower native resolution than 640x400 or 640x480, a Normal2x scaler is still neccesary) and disable some of the emulated sound devices (GUS, Tandy, Disney, MPU-401 and PC Speaker all can be disabled to save some CPU power).
