I read some depressing statistics in my newspaper today. Over 25% of New Zealanders think that the LHC will create a black hole big enough to swallow the Earth. Seriously, for a black hole that size, you would need to smack together a lot more particles at a higher velocity.

No, one as small as the LHC would be able to create would collapse very soon after it was created. Such a small hole does not have enough force to pull in matter from around it before it collapses.

Oh, so they already know that fact for sure? Or it is just some guessing?
Once they were sure the Earth was flat ........ they even could prove that fact.
Once they were sure something heavier then air couldn't fly .... they even could prove that fact.
