![]() I have finished all 5 games in the series, the first two with text parser without any help from walkthrough. I must say, QFG4 - Shadows of Darkness is the best with it's mature setting. But I couldn't beat the end-boss in QFG5 as the flame breath from the dragon would let my computer crash everytime.

![]() I played this game in early 90s in my grand old desktop.
I downloaded it, started playing and realized that i don't have a keypad in my Laptop. I am using a dosbox and can you guide me how can i use all the features. I can't use my mouse in the DOSbox either. |

![]() You always can remap the needed keys in dosbox.
You start the keymapper program with CTRL+F1 It's an easy to use dosbox feature. More explanation if needed: dosbox readme.

![]() Excellent game for an excellent series. QFG1 is probably the best overall game of the series. I think QFG4 has the best story, but I didn't like the combat. It seemed too hard for a fighter or thief, which I honestly never really bothered with since my characters always used magic and it was incredibly easy just to hang back and launch spells until a monster died.

![]() I don't know, for some bizarre reason, I have a soft spot for QFG2. But yes, this one started it all and it was wonderful, and the fell of this one I think it was recaptured with QFG4, except for the gothic/lovecraftian horror mix they added to the fourth (I don't mean that gothic horror and lovecraftian horror are similar, I know they are complete oposites. But this game manages to mix them both: vampires, undeads and haunted castle on one side, and mad monks, deformed abomination and dark unspeakeable gods on the other). The third just tries to be a bit too seriousm and it doesn't seems to be a part of the series (which, if IRC, is the case: the third one was added to the original idea). The fifth I only played once, and I didn't really liked it the same way as the others: it just seems another game altogether. Although the third one see,s different from the other, you know for its gameplay and such that is from the same series. With the fifth you know by its characters and story and such that it's part from the same series, but it's gameplay seems totally different (and it's ambientations feels out of place: the other four could all be reasonably on the same time period -except some things from the fourth- but this seem a lot more ancient -well, except for the scientists- due to the ancient greece inspiration).
I always loved playing the mage, not only in this game but in general: I love characters with magical abilities. But what I like about the thief are the robbery quests: they have charm, puzzle and a kick ass music! Except on the third (And I didn't played the thief on the fifth, yet), where the only two robbery missions are part of the storyline (when on the other two were optional), very simple and completely unecessary from the plot POV. The thief here is somewhat romantic, and the robberies, even when it is depicable (the case of the old lady from QFG1, for example), have that adventurous charm of the romantic thief, with some nice puzzles and some humor. The fighter is too straighfoward in my opinion, and only on QFG2 it has something that makes it interesting: the EOF sidequest and the quest for paladinhood (although every class could be named paladin if you played it honorable enough, although I think it was changed for the anthology edition: I had a mage turned paladin at the end of Trial by Fire). And the paladin is only really interesting on the QFG4, where it has it's own set of sidequests. For the fifth I can't speak: as I said before, I only played it once with my magician. |

![]() The only thing I really don't like about QFG5 is the combat. It doesn't zoom in for combat and it abandons what little strategy the previous games had. Otherwise, I thought it was decent. Certainly better than King's Quest 8 from what I played or Gabriel Knight 3 which wasn't bad but had lots of annoying quirks.

![]() Ha, I have gabriel knight II and III and I can bring myself to play them. I don't know why, maybe because I loved GK I too much and I am afraid of being disillusioned?
And yeah, combat on QFG5 is messy and... don't know... ugly. A horde of people attacks you, you hithithithithithithit and sometimes run away. Or you cast dazzle and hithithithithithit. And I don't know, but the ambientation, the perspective, everything seemed to me like another game, didn't find the emotional and gameplay connection with the others... I am not saying it an ugly game, just that I prefer the old QFG style. And parser, at that! |
