Oh god, I remember this section of the game. Timing is everything, and from memory it seems to also relies on where you click on the screen.
If the game runs under DosBOX (I'm sorry I can't recall if it does or not) then you can try slowing your cycles down, that might make it easier. Nice taste in game by the way
